March Monthly Meeting: The Future of Police Accountability in San Diego

On Tuesday, March 23rd at 6pm  the Carmel Valley Democrats will host their monthly meeting on Zoom.  The topic of March's meeting is, "The Future of Police Accountability in San Diego".  The speakers will be returning guest, Andrea St. Julien and Patrick Anderson.  St. Julien is the principal author of Measure B, the charter amendment to create a Commission on Police Practices which was overwhelmingly passed by San Diego County voters last November. She is also the co-chair of SanDiegansforJustice.com, the PAC that supported the charter amendment.  Patrick Anderson is a Professor in the departments of Communication, Ethnic Studies, and Critical Gender Studies at UCSD and a current member of San Diego’s existing community review board.  The current board is limited to reviewing investigations conducted by the SDPD’s internal affairs division.

St. Julien and Anderson will give a short history of why the commission is needed, help Carmel Valley Democrats understand how this process will work and give their vision of a commission that works for all citizens.

Carmel Valley President Lauren Macdonald says of the meeting: “Our membership really appreciated Andrea St. Julien when she spoke to us in July.  We learned so much and our members were very engaged and had a lot of questions for her.  We all left with a much better understanding of why a truly independent Police Commission was so needed in San Diego. We so appreciate that she accepted our invitation to come back so soon.  I am sure it is going to be a very informative and interesting meeting for those of us who care about making San Diego a more just city and county.”
